Smartphone-based bridge monitoring through vehicle–bridge interaction: analysis and experimental assessment

Abstract In this study, the results of a vast experimental campaign on applicability smartphone-based technique for bridge monitoring are presented. Specifically, vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI)-based approach is exploited as cost-effective means to estimate natural frequencies bridges, with final aim possibly developing low-cost and diffused infrastructure system. The analysis performed using common hybrid vehicle, fully equipped classical piezoelectric accelerometers smartphone MEMS accelerometer, record its vertical accelerations while passing over bridge. regard, carried out considering vehicle moving constant velocity in city Palermo (Italy). Appropriate identification procedures then employed determine modal data from recorded accelerations.
